MEET LORALEA CARRUTHERS

Loralea Carruthers is a public-education champion, environmental activist and community leader. As the Ontario Liberal candidate in the 2014 provincial election, she increased the York–Simcoe Liberal vote to the closest result in over four decades.

Loralea is a four-term trustee on the York Region District School, representing a rural area in a largely urban school board. First elected in 2003, Loralea delivers for students and their families, including two new elementary schools in East Gwillimbury in two years, while providing fiscal responsibility and a focus on student success. Following a troubling period for the board, Loralea stepped up and won election as chair. Under her leadership, the board aggressively worked to address equity concerns and improve public accountability. She was widely praised for her leadership in putting the board back on track, including winning the Human Rights Award from the National Council of Canadian Muslims.

Loralea is also a former vice-president of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, where she served as an association spokesperson to the Ministry of Education. As vice-president, Loralea represented all public school boards in the 2008 salary negotiations.

In addition to her work as a trustee, Loralea is an environmental and consumer activist, including working to improve the Tarion Home Warranty system and as a long-time member of her town’s Environmental Advisory Committee. Loralea was also president of the East Gwillimbury/Newmarket Association for New Residents. She is a former member of the East Gwillimbury Public Library Board.

Loralea has lived in rural Holland Landing for decades, where she raised her two adult children. Professionally, Loralea worked at large advertising agencies, handling multi-million-dollar accounts as a media supervisor, manager and lead negotiator for major clients. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and French and earned a Master’s of Education from UOIT.
